Jurij, Feature film composed by Leonard Rosenman,
orchestrated, adapted (Ciaccona), and conducted by Michael Patterson
“Leonard Rosenman has not scored a film or television show since 1997. However, that has been remedied with his score to the 2001 Italian film "Jurij." For it Rosenman has crafted an excellent, mature, and emotional score. While the classic Rosenman touches (piling fifths, brass pyramids, serialism and twelve-tone motifs) are in effect, the main thematic crux is a motif that floats above the orchestra, usually played by a violin doubled with a flute. Rosenman's score is a musical journey, running us through a gamut of emotions, but also a retrospective score, looking back while facing forward the whole time. From the mood shifting "Remembrance" to the lush and haunting "Isabella Studies Jurij" and lastly to the tense "Storm and Death" Rosenman's score is beautiful, furious, and filled with energy and wistfulness. The album closes with the amazing "Ciaccona per Violino" a ten-minute work that (as can be inferred from the title) prominently features a solo violinist. The piece is played to perfection, and the same can be said of the rest of the soundtrack. This score is essential to any lover of fine music. The only downside is that there is a little more than thirty minutes of music on the CD, and by the end, you are hungering for more music. To Maestro Rosenman, one can only say "Bravo!" -Denz Cordell
